At the foot of Mount Horai, just a short distance from Lake Biwa, Shiro Shimizu has established his kiln.

Guided by his philosophy of “never buying clay, but digging it myself,” Shimizu-san creates everything from tea ceremony wares to sculptural objects, allowing the character of the earth itself to guide the work. We are deeply drawn to the powerful, distinctive expressions that emerge from this intimate relationship with the soil.

This tea caddy is a striking piece, as though the immense power of the earth itself has been condensed into a single, small form.

The raw clay that Shimizu-san dug himself meets the fire, scorching in some places and melting ash in others. Through these complex interactions, it reveals a one-of-a-kind landscape on its surface.

The finely textured grains of earth can be felt at the fingertips, while its rugged surface evokes the force and intensity of the fire. Quiet yet undeniably full of vitality, this is a piece that continues to radiate a powerful presence within the tea ceremony setting.
