Crystals and Rain

Before we knew it, this is our 10th exhibition with Masayuki Miyagi.

We are filled with gratitude towards Masayuki and Aki Miyagi, who have created opportunities for us to meet so many diverse people over these 10 years.

"Ash Glaze" and "Celadon" were first unveiled at his debut solo exhibition.

While those of us involved secretly held anxieties about how they would be received,
looking back 10 years later, they have sublimated into magnificent works that are now synonymous with Mr. Miyagi.

Gazing at the beautiful "crystals" shining in the well of the bowls reminds us of the precious time we have spent taking on challenges alongside the two of them.

Giving Life to Things

"I bought one, used it, and loved it, so I came back again."

How many times have we heard these words?

Mr. Miyagi's vessels are best understood when actually used.
This is proven by the fact that the number of our repeat customers increases year by year.

Many customers also tell us, "After the tableware, I'd like a flower vase next."

Tableware is for food.
Vases are for plants.

How can we give them life?
How will they be used by the people who breathe life into them?

That sentiment is conveyed through every detail of Mr. Miyagi's work.

A Drink on the Porch

While global attention on Japanese cuisine has soared over the last 10 years, it has also been a wonderful decade in Japan for encountering newly interpreted alcoholic beverages such as natural wine, craft beer, and craft gin.

We have held numerous events with sommeliers and chefs,
providing excellent opportunities for people to actually use Mr. Miyagi's vessels.

Being able to create a relaxed time sharing drinks with our customers is entirely thanks to Mr. Miyagi's warm personality.

This year, we will be hosting the tea ceremony "10 Rains / Juu" at KYO, so please look forward to it.

What Culture Connects

Personally, when I want to speak passionately about Mr. Miyagi's vessels, it always comes back to the "Wakuta Makai".

It is the simplest and most functional vessel created by Mr. Miyagi, who was born and raised in Okinawa.
I cannot hide my astonishment that this perfected form was created 400 years ago.

Of course, I love the modern shapes Mr. Miyagi creates, but this Makai, which inspires so much conversation, seemingly possesses a power to attract highly sensitive and discerning individuals.

One such individual is chef Ryo Haga, who we are welcoming as a special guest for the tea ceremony at Sabo Kyo to coincide with this exhibition.

Mr. Haga and Mr. Miyagi met in Okinawa, and I have known Mr. Haga from his time working at monk and the noma Kyoto pop-up.

He recently purchased this Makai at AMAHARE, but I never imagined we would end up collaborating in a form like this!

To be able to enjoy Mr. Haga's cuisine in Mr. Miyagi's vessels... I am already looking forward to it immensely.

Five Winds, Ten Rains

It has a beauty resembling a raindrop shining upon a single leaf.

How much peaceful time have these crystals brought to so many households over these 10 years?

The wind blows once every 5 days, and it rains once every 10 days.

Much like this perfectly balanced relationship with nature, Mr. Miyagi's works are never imposing; they gently stay by your side and are sure to make your everyday life more comfortable.

Together with Maa-kun, we sincerely look forward to your visit.
